Train Cancelled - Refund

I recently had a long distance train cancelled on me from Devon to London Heathrow. I purchased through the Trainline App and have claimed a refund.
Unfortunately they say they need the tickets back before processing and here lies the problem. I had a flight to catch after that train and am now away from the UK for 6 weeks in the Middle East so I can't get those tickets back to them within the 28 days required! (the Wife did a 6 hour round trip to drop me off in the car - to Heathrow - not the Middle East!) Where does this requirement come from? Is it absolute?
I understand that it may be to prevent / check that the ticket wasn't used but I find it hard to agree that after the train company have made an error they can also impose a restriction which denies me my right to compensation through no fault of my own. If I can't claim through them for these reasons can I still claim through Money Claim online?

Can you not post the tickets to your wife so that she can then forward them on ?0

Can you take a picture of them to show that they are unmarked, unclipped etc? Of ask them if they are willing to foot the bill to send them from where you are?
Or tell them you are away for 6-8 weeks (cover your behind if it takes a while to get organised) and ask them if they could extend the time limit for returning the tickets? What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
