But MY soup is better according to the family!
Exactly. :o Mr LW insists that HM soup and jam (not together, of course) are far superior to shop-bought, same with bread and cakes - he prefers mine; so I am happy to make them for him. He's also very good at helping in the kitchen; slicing things I can't manage to do for example; and if there's nothing else for him to do, he happily tackles the washing up. It makes all the difference. ;)

I do keep some packet soup in for emergencies, if I'm just too poorly to cook for instance, but generally I make it myself. I also keep a sliced loaf in the freezer "just in case"; but generally that just gets used for the breadcrumbs part of HM nut loaf.:D

    Hi
what sort of flour do you use, JIL?

Any, brown, white and it works with both plain and self raising, perhaps due to the bicarbonate of soda.

It's not as good as my Irish mils but it's quick, cheap and very easy.

It goes well with home made soup.

We freeze the 'rest' of the loaf after the weekend (that is when they use the bread mainly) sliced, so can come out for eggs on toast etc.

A few weeks ago whilst doing my online grocery shop I was offered a flash sale of a tandoori chicken meal. It is usually £12.50. I paid £6.25 when it arrived it had all the ingredients to make tandoori chicken, aloo potatoes with raita and salad. No waste, but I actually felt robbed. It tasted good, it looked good but I could not believe that anyone would pay £12.50 for it.

I really enjoyed the potatoes and I had never thought of making them to go with an Indian dish previously. I could see the paste that came in the pack was cumin seeds, mustard seeds, turmeric and ginger, so I made my own paste and recreated the dish.

I think there is a place for shop bought items, but I think for value and taste you cannot beat homemade.
  • question for hm soupers .. when you use tomatoes do you deseed and deskin or do you chuck the whole tomato in?

Chuck the lot in, when blizted if theres still seeds sieve it :)

I cant believe anyone thinks shop bought soup is nicer then HM tbh, and yes whilst my cakes and biscuits are not as polished or as adventurous as shop bought, they taste 100% nicer

I had a right mishap making cookies last week, they came out looking like buns :rotfl: but they tasted just fine and DH said they were lovely and and ate them

You just can not beat HM bread, its food from the gods. If it weren't for the fact id eat the whole loaf in one sitting Id make more of it

Jil Im making tandoori chicken masala today. This is a dish I make every couple of months. The original outlay of spices Id say was £2 and those packets are still going strong with numerous dishes made. Since then the only things I have to buy to make it is a tub of yoghurt and the chicken. I always have onions, tinned tomatoes, tomato puree, garlic and ginger in the house. No way would I pay £12 for a kit:eek:

I cut 'em in half and chuck the whole lot in. Firstly, I cba skinning and de-seeding, and secondly, I think you're throwing away perfectly good food if you do that. There are occasionally recognisable tiny bits of the skin after I've blitzed it in the food processor, but nothing unpleasant; and the seeds seem to totally vanish into the soup every time.

My HM bread doesn't hang around long enough to freeze any, but if there's some left when we leave for our holiday (which, scarily, is fast approaching) we shall slice and freeze it.
The only reason I keep some shop-bought wholemeal bread in the freezer is for if I get a few days when I'm just too poorly to even deal with the breadmaker. It does happen occasionally, unfortunately.
