Help! Wiffy house - Pickled Onions

Options
I've just finished peeling three buckets of pickle onions. I did this with the backdoor and window open hoping that the smell would disappear.

I've just had a shower (i felt really smelly lol) and i've come downstairs and it still smells awful especially in the lounge :(

Any ideas how to get rid of the smell?

my grandfather used to keep a box of matches in the bathroom for such an occasion.
  • I had this problem last week - I opened some windows and then by the next day it was gone (BTW I didn't leave them open all night!!!!) My hands however ........

i left eggs boiling in a pan and forgot about them, i got a phone call from a neighbour as the window cleaner noticed that my kitchen was filled with smoke.
There is no worse smell than that !!
It took me over a week to get rid of the smell, painted the kitchen and hall, washed all the curtains and bedding, was told to clean surfaces with lemon juice to help get rid of the smell. I had the windows open constantly for a week and didnt invite anyone round until the smell had gone.
  • If you have any nice smelling candles, have some of those alight and a window or door open... I think its not just the scent of the candles but the air being used up by the flames burning - er, someone more scientific than me can explain it properly !

Kitty beat me to it.. works on cigarette smoke too. Doesn't have to be a scented candle. a plain one works as well.
Old wives tale says something about putting a bowl of water in the offending room - or was that for paint?

ditto for lighting a candle. its the carbon that results from the candle light that works on removing odours from the air. so any plain old candle would do.

as for the smell on your hands.. try rubbing all over your hand with anything stainless steel (spoon or handle of fork as opposed to knife!) under running water, works the same way as those stainless steel 'soap'

The best way to get rid of onion or paint smells is to boil some water and leave it in a bowl and then stick some sliced fresh lemon in it. Works every time.

A cooks candle (expensive but good) works wonders on all types of kitchen smells!
  • Well....my hubby thought he'd forgotten our anniversary or something lol
He came in from work with every candle in the house lit and wondered what was happening.

    It worked though :)

Also tried the bowls of boiled water too :)

Thank you all for taking the time to reply.
