Newcastle university isn't a crummy ex poly. It is a Russel Group university. The mistake she made was to not get a job in Newcastle or a town close by. They have jobs like the one she has got in other parts of the country apart from London. Also what she is doing is not a graduate level job so she could have got any non graduate level job anywhere else where she could afford to buy.

It's not obvious whether it would be cheaper for her to get a job in Newcastle and live there paying all her own bills, or live rent-free with her parents (and for all we know get much of her food provided and her cleaning and laundry done) and pay for commuting to her London job instead.

Also, if her current job were not "graduate level" then I doubt her employer would be sponsoring her through a master's.

I agree with the others who've said that they don't perceive her as moaning. She seems to be the sort of person who takes opportunities to earn a bit extra here and there on top of her regular earnings, and getting paid to write one of the Grauniad's "how I spend it" series seems to me to be a legitimate means to earn an honest crust or two.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Any job in Newcastle is certain to be a dead end, so it would be a poor decision to put down roots there. There is a reason why houses there are cheap: nobody has a well-paid job.

Which makes me wonder if you are a troll, have never been to Newcastle or are just a snob.

What makes you think there are no advancement prospects for a job in Newcastle?

Those three possibilities aren't mutually exclusive!

The property prices tell the whole story. It's so cheap nobody wants to go there and those who do haven't a bean.

It's not a nice place to visit and you wouldn't want to live there.

Property prices aren't a sole indicator of desirability. Just of supply and demand.
How many people do you reckon live in London purely for a work and would move away if they could?

That doesn't mean there aren't good jobs and careers up there, just there aren't as many and there's still currently a focus on London because of inertia.

Economic and western promise are purportedly wealthy and intelligent. It's troubling that they both also appear to be bitterly unhappy. I can't recall a single positive post from either one.

It is also an attitude. One of the first things I had to learn in the Southeast was this. "If it costs more it must be better." In the northwest it was "I am not paying that for that." It is this attitude that confuses politicians who have never been north of Watford Gap. They assume that because someone won't pay £500k for a grotty 2 bed terraced that they are poor and can't afford it not that they have made the decision that £500k for a grotty 2 bed terrace is ridiculous and they aren't paying it.

    The article doesn't make sense.

If she is living rent free and her only outgoings are commuting costs and food, why will it take seven years to save £20k?
