Porting mortgage declined

I have just had my request to port my mortgage with Nationwide declined although they have referred it to the underwriters to appeal the decision . They have declined based on my credit rating which is because I'm up to my limit on 3 credit cards. We are moving to a cheaper house that will free up a lump sum of £75000. All our debts will be paid and we are put down a £145000 deposit on a £224000 house. We will be £1400 a month better off with no debt and only 6 years left on our mortgage. It makes no sense to me as to why we would be declined. Has anyone else had this and been successful with their appeal?
