My husband and I both overpaid tax last year. He left his employer at the end of December and has a p45 showing tax paid to that point.

I left one part time job holding my full allowance in November, one br in october and did a short run as a temp in march. Three p45s issued.

Consequently I know we overpaid, how do I get it back?

make sure you are on a .Gov website, not a website from a company looking to take a % of any refund you get

Thanks for the link, I had been on that page, to claim if you have stopped work it has to be within the tax year. We were not employed a the end of the tax year.

Obviously I am missing the bit on your link that addresses my circumstances, please could you be more specific and point it out to me?

If you can wait to July (ish) for the refund it'll happen automatically as part of the HMRC process after the tax year finishes. If you can't wait that long, it's a P50 detailed under the heading "you've stopped work".

Edit : I've just had a look at the HMRC site and it says refunds are usually made between June and November. Maybe I've been lucky to get it in July in the past.

You could log into your/his Personal Tax Account and request the refund in there?

For anyone coming afterwards the relevant part of the P50 'If you are not working for four weeks' section that has been quoted a couple of times here is that the for has to be submitted WITHIN the tax year.

Having spoken to the revenue my initial thoughts were correct and it cannot be submitted now the 2017/18 tax year has ended.

I am being told I have to wait for due process when my 2017/18 figures are reviewed and then an overpayment will be refunded 'in due course'. I should have completed the form P50 as soon as we stopped work, not waited for the end of the tax year.
