Joint application question

Hoping to apply for a mortgage soon but my husband and I have different credit scores / history. I'm wondering to what extent my poor history will impact our application.
If we apply and it's declined because of me I'd naturally feel bad. Then If we were declined and he applied as a single applicant he might be turned down because of the previous application!
Anyone been through this?
