leather coat - can it have gone mouldy?

Hi
I have a leather coat which has been stored downstairs in one of the rooms of our very old not very often heated house.
I dont know if it has spots of mould on it, or if it is paint residue. (the room was used for storing coats and jackets and OH has lots of dirty dusty painting stuff).
What is the best way to clean this up. I dont want to damage the leather or the colour of the leather.
any advice welcome. I have tried cleaning gently with a damp cloth. Dust has wiped off but still several small whitish patches on the front of the coat.
