Bosses' boss invited to my annual appraisal meeting

Should I be worried? I received a calendar invitation today from my line manager for my annual appraisal next month and I noted that my line managers boss had also been invited to the same meeting.
All of the previous half yearly and annual appraisal meetings I've had with the organisation have only been with my line manager; in fact all of my previous appraisals in firms prior to this have only involved my line manager. Any thoughts?

Has he ever been to one before? Maybe he likes to see the line manager is doing his job properly, it might not be about you.
If not, how have previous appraisals gone? If good, maybe a promotion is on the cards. If bad, well......0 -
As bugslet says, it might be part of your manager's appraisal process. Can't you ask your manager why his manager is attending? You say it hasn't happened before so it's not an unreasonable question.0

If HR are also invited I would worry.0

I'm a manager and my manager is meant to observe one appraisal and one return to work meeting that I do. I'd just ask, hopefully help you prepare if there's another reason behind it and put your mind at rest if there isn't.0

No-one here can possibly know (unless your boss/bosses boss have sussed you and are reading every word on here)
Given what you've shared on here there's a multitude of reasons but given you've raised the suspense level do come back and let us know please0 -
Maybe he has invited him but not to attend ie FYI only, to show he is carrying out his job.
Send an email and ask why as some one has already suggested.Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100/100miles

Unless you have concerns about your performance in the last appraisal period I wouldn't worry about it, just let it happen. You never know, maybe they are considering you for a big promotion and the boss's boss wants to get a closer look at you.0

Maybe the boss's boss wants to meet this poster for themselves.Originally Posted by shortcrust

He's only been in the business about a year, can't remember if he was in place when I had my previous years appraisal to be honest. It did strike me on the preceding email when my line manager sent me through the time lines of what had to be completed by when he stated that he would be sending invitations out to have a sit down with him, then the invitation included his boss as well.Has he ever been to one before? Last year's appraisal was fine, the 6 monthly one was OK not brilliant.0 -
My last full appraisal was fine, my 6 monthly one wasn't brilliant tbh without going into the detail, one of the points which was raised I objected against and requested in writing via email another meeting to review this relevant comment which was postponed by my line manager then never reconvened again stating that he was too busy.Unless you have concerns about your performance in the last appraisal period I wouldn't worry about it, just let it happen. It's quite a small team so I have very regular interactions with my bosses boss so I can see no positive reason for him to be in the same room.0
