Costs of crowns and veneers, cosmetic dentist.

I’m seriously thinking about having new crowns and veneers and I know I’ve got to have it done privately. Here’s my situation.
I’ve got quiet a few upper crowns, all my front teeth are crowned and I’ve also got one veneer. I’ve had these crowns in for many years now, five of then have been in for over thirty four years.....yes, you’ve read that right thirty four years. Over time they’ve got discoloured, my gums have resided a little and my nhs dentist did do some repair work to them, but the white filling he used as started to stain. He’s also done some repair work to the back of the crowns as well. One crown did come out a while back and I had to have pins/post drilled up into my gum to support the crown, another one came out a few days ago and there’s hardly any tooth showing so I think it’s going to be the same with this one. I’m ringing my nhs dentist up tomorrow and I’ll get a same day appointment to get it put back in.
So, can anyone give me an idea of how much it costs to go privately for replacement crowns and veneners. Also, are crowns fitted privately stronger/better than ones available on the Nhs? I know I can make an appointment to see a cosmetic dentist and get the answer, but I am bit worried that they’ll show me what can be achieved and I can’t afford it, don’t think my husband would be too pleased if I want to re mortgage our home, so I’d like a ball park figure of costs if possible.
Thanks.

Ask your NHS dentist for a quote. Most will do private work and your dentist will be best placed to tell you if redoing them is a good idea , if there is enough tooth left on the pinned one etc . It will give you an idea of cost but will not commit you to any treatment.0

Oh thanks, I thought of that but I!!!8217;ve watched an advert on the internet for a cosmetic dentist and they had really up to date equipment. I will ask my nhs dentist when I go, hopefully he will be able to advise me what I can have done. I just want to smile without worrying what my teeth look like. I!!!8217;ve always looked after my teeth, been going to the dentist every six months since my teens, I!!!8217;m 60 now, but I do think that my first dentist who I saw for over twenty years did do unnecessary work in my mouth.0

I would just add to Brook's post that you should - out of courtesy - raise it with your own regular dentist and see what he advises. Whether he feels that he can do the necessary work, or whether he feels a referral to a practice like you mention would be in your best interest.
I would be quite open and honest with him about what sort of result you are looking for. If it is just replacing old crowns for new crowns - then that is quite straightforward, and although charging you privately, should be well within the capabilities of your current dentist.
If you really want a different 'look' when you smile. Something straighter, more even, etc, then it might be as well for him to refer you somewhere where things like orthodontics might be looked at first.
What shouldn't be done, is to have your current dentist - or any dentist - doing something to you that doesn't live up to your expectation, and then more work (and more damage) done to try and get it right.
This is why it's also not the best idea to 'try' somewhere just because you like the look of the website or an advert they run.
It would be best to go to your own dentist, try and be as honest and descriptive as you can be of what you're expecting - and if he feels he can't do what you require, he will be better placed to know a good reliable place he could send you to to get things sorted. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Thanks Toothsmith for your reply.
Rang my dentist this morning at 8.45 and was seen at 10.40, I!!!8217;m so lucky to go to such a good dental practice. My dentist is on holiday at the moment so I was seen by his partner.
I!!!8217;m afraid I need a new crown, it!!!8217;s not straight forward like it was before. Had X-ray done, nerve taken out, first root canal treatment, post put in and old crown temporarily fitted. Next appointment for second root canal treatment not till mid June, then need crown prep appointment and appointment to fit the new crown.....appointments made, all finished on the 10th July.
I spoke to the dentist about having work done privately and he!!!8217;s told me to discuss it with my dentist. I have got an appointment for a check up with him beginning of next month, so I!!!8217;ll tell him what I would like doing and he can tell me if it!!!8217;s possible. I trust my dentist and I know he will tell me straight whats what and won!!!8217;t give me false hope.
I want my bottom teeth whitened, it!!!8217;s silly doing the top because all visible teeth are crowns. Once my teeth are whitened I want two veneers on two bottom front teeth and new replacement crowns on my top teeth. My only worry is both crowns that have recently come out, the tooth supporting them have broken off so I don!!!8217;t if it!!!8217;s going to be the same with the others. I just want a brighter smile and not feel conscious of my teeth.0
