santander mortgage application for the self employed is long

Hi
so in the middle of an application with santander, myself and my partner are both self employed so had to send our SA302's, 3 months bank statements etc and my mrs is part employed due to one part requiring her to be on an employed contract (casual contract), we waited for a good week for it to make it to the underwriters desk then got asked to supply the contract for the employed work which was fair enough, sent that over within 20mins then got told by the broker we are now at the back of the queue and should be seen again by the underwriters in about 6 days.
this is madness, is this normal? really hoping that the rest of the application is done as the valuation had already happened. would be so annoyed if in 6 days they ask another question as you'd think they would get all the question sent out in one go and ideally be put to the top of the pile once you have replied.
are brokers able to find out how far along the process is and if we have passed all the other checks. or can they only see the updates on santander's website (passed onto underwriters etc)?
