What does a underwriter do?

Hi :)

I’m applying for a mortgage with HSBC with my partner. sent all the documents to them - payslips, Bank statements etc. Had a phone call yesterday saying that me and my partner have passed full credit checks and it’s now being forwarded to the underwriters.
What do underwriters do?

    They will check your bank statements and payslips tally up with your application. They will check it is not a fraudulent application. They will check that they are basically happy with your application as a whole.

    I have sent everything to them and did the application over the phone and the mortgage advisor has done everything else.
    Should I be worried? I don!!!8217;t want to get my hopes up and then they tell me I!!!8217;ve been declined?
