Do you make mistakes at work?

Everyone does. Problems only really occur when:

1.You make lots of mistakes regularly

2.You make a huge error that has serious repercussions

3.You try to avoid responsibility by telling lies, covering it up, or blaming someone else.

In situation one, you would need to ask yourself if you understood and could do your job or needed extra training; if you had time to do it without rushing; or if you were too easily distracted and didn't concentrate enough.

Situation two should be avoided at all costs, so the more important the task, the more careful you should be. Never rush or cut corners with the big stuff. Make sure you completely understand what is required and how to do it; check and check again.

Never get into situation three. Admit your mistakes immediately, preferably with a suggestion as to how to put them right. Never blame anyone else. If someone else contributed to the error, explain the circumstances, but always own your own part in what went wrong.

    Put your hands up.

  • One day at work I heard Mike's voice from behind his desk:
    "That's it....rub harder.....it's coming"

When I looked, he was on the floor with Carol, and there was a white splash on the carpet.

    They'd spilt some Tippex.

When I was straight out of uni I applied for a job that was a stepping stone to my dream job. I was then offered a role that was the next rung up from what I'd applied for and I jumped at the chance. I moved to the other end of the country for it but when I got there the job was not the one I'd applied for, or what I'd been offered but something else completely. Still it was in the right area so I didn't question it. but I was so green and nervous that I was teriffied, on edge all the time and trying so hard. I loved the job but only lasted 6 months as I made so many mistakes. 3 years later I managed to get a similar role to what I'd 1st applied for at the bottom of the ladder, minimum wage after 12 years of Uni, but I loved it. Lasted 6 months as I kept making mistakes. I couldn't work out why.

I now do something unrelated to the 12 years of uni and the failed jobs but took me 7 years to find something I was good enough at to keep a Full Time Permenant more than minimum wage job.
I do like the job but but I don't like using the skillsets it needs or the fact that I am rubbish at what I enjoy doing and don't enjoy what I'm good at but I guess we can't all be good at something even if we try really really hard.
So if you have found a company that accepts it has to employ humans and that humans are error prone then lucky you.

When I worked in travel admin I loaded the wrong set of rooms to our system. Customers were paying extra for a lovely view of the sea when the best they could hope for was to sit and look at a grass verge or the car park across the road :)

There are careers which deal with mistake management.

Very lucrative if you are good at it.

I wouldn't worry about it. Most managers like people who make mistakes anyway as it validates their superiority.
