Role play

Depends on the role and the individual. I've done role play in retail and found I performed much better when I was put on the shopfloor with customers instead of a room with assessors pretending they were having a party and nothing was in stock. HR need to be more specific with their requirements if they don't want a tonne of applications, and if they do get a lot then obviously the skills aren't rare so again should be specifying their ideal candidate instead of being vague and putting the onus on the applicant.
It irks me how much is required for applications for roles, especially those that pay less than £8p/h. I've applied for positions that pay a lot more than that and the interview required you to do some other daft thought-up activity that didn't involve demonstrating your skills and knowledge of the company. It's how a lot of narcissists slip through the net.0 -
Pre-employment Customer service role plays are always unrealistic. What employer would reveal to potential employees the level of abuse they may have to endure?0

Unfortunately, westbridgfordguy has nailed it.
Personally I don't think they really are the best way to get staff. I know I'd be rubbish at it, I don't act and pretend scenarios would just feel silly to me. I might be able to do the job in real life though.
Last person I interviewed was in a bar, worked for both of us.:D
I'm the opposite, excellent in the role plays at interview and in training but feel silly doing it in real life.:o
(Well I used to be - back in the day.)0 -

Had one day to prepare for one and the feedback was my product knowledge was not there and I missed a few selling points. I look back at my cv, my experience and it’s obvious that I wouldn’t be where I am if I couldn’t male a simple phone call.
Don’t get me wrong, if you ace an role play it’s a good indicator that you can do a role but a poor one showing that you can’t. I have multiple interviews, still working at my old company and you think I have the time to spend an entire day reading 50 pages?
What happened to simply inviting someone down for an interview and questioning the, face to face?
If it takes you a whole day just to read 50 pages of text, you're always going to have a problem with any employment where reading skills are required.0 -
This reminds me of that guy in 2013!

I can't actually believe that it was so long ago though!!0 -
My son has had to do role plays for his application to join the Police.0
