Update:

I managed to get hold of the last audio-book in a trilogy I have been following (just as well as I had read the first two) on 10 CDs but as .WMA files. After a bit of research I found two handy little pieces of kit called:

You might know of them, but just in case somebody doesn't I thought I'd mention them. With freac I converted the discs to MP3 and mergemp3 merged all the files (256) into one MP3 file, which I was able to load on an MP3 player. This works well and I understand it so I think I'll stick with this route for the future.
