Higher child benefit charge - scared

Options
Hi,

M partner has today received a letter saying he has a higher child benefit charge from year ending 2015 and year ending 2016.

Hands up, I completely forgot about the higher bracket when his salary went into the 50k bracket and then he was made redundant in march 2016.

The charge is £1400 which we just about manage but they are saying we owe interest and will include penalties, i am scared stiff - what will the interest be?

Please anyone who can advise much appreciated, I'm terrified we are going to have to pay thousands

Thanks
