Check your Halifax mortgage details!

About a year ago, Halifax must have moved the location for their mortgage admin from Halifax to Gloucester. It seems that in the process of moving operations the names and addresses of all (or at least some) of the mortgages were re-keyed and errors have crept in! I suggest anyone with a mortage at Halifax checks that their name and address details are correct.

I noticed an error in the postcode of the mortgage statement I received this week - the last character of the postcode had changed from "N" to "H". The help-desk person in my local branch checked that my personal details in the HBOS system were still correct and couldn't explain why the address postcode displayed on the mortgage statement differed - why have two separate address records? Or course, it proved impossible for her to change it so had to get onto Halifax Central and have me explain the problem; the adviser there couldn't explain it either but at least he understood the issue and eventually got the "Asset Security Team" involved because my mortgage details would have to be checked against the Land Registry data-base. Eventually, this check was done and the postcode was corrected. The mortgage telephone adviser admitted that address data had been rekeyed and others had reported incorrect data. I wonder why Halifax had to rekey address data (notorious for being error-prone) and why they couldn't automatically compare the property details against the Land Registry data to spot inconsistencies. As the helpful lady in my branch pointed out, if the error hadn't been corrected, it might have created a problem sometime in the distant future when the property is sold and the morgage redeemed.
