Paying too much for travel?

Hi recently my car broke down, and for about two weeks I had to travel in London by train. I just used my bank card to touch in and out.
My question is what is the daily rate limits and caps. I understand it's more during peak hours. I did some research and found travelcards are £12 per day zones 1-6?
Some of my daily charges were total £16. 40. Plus most days I was only travelling zones 5-2. I live in zone five.
Also is it possible to be to get records of your travel when only using a bank card?
This doesent seem right can anyone help

I think you need to have set up an account and then you can see the journey history for any oyster card or contactless card. It certainly works for my contactless card0
