A good point about Linux operating systems (and Ubuntu is just one of many) (link here), is that they run well on older systems.

Some Linux distributions are designed for older PCs. They can run happily on a 6GB disk and 256MB memory and pentium 1Ghz and above.

If all you want to do is run Firefox, Thunderbird, and OpenOffice then Linux is a possibility on an older second hand PC.

A couple of things to check are, if you have wifi will your wifi card work. Also will your printer work.

So rather than looking for a new PC for linux have a think about re-using some existing technology. £30 will sort you out with a base unit. £10 should get a wifi card if you need one. Instead of dual booting with windows buy a KVM switch, all that techno hassle vanishes. And when your PC breaks you can still access the internet, word process etc. etc.
  • linux is great for stability and range o things you can do with it. not so good if all you want to do is play champ manager all day long!

Note the tesco model doesnt have a modem and a lot of major broadband providers wont support linux so for it to be a bargain do your homework first. same with all the extras such as printers/scanners/webcams etc

to be honest though, i have a windows laptop and an old pc that i cobbled together with bits from car boots and skeletons of old pc's that runs linux. Both have their pros and cons, but i think i would actually begrudge paying over 100 quid for a pc running linux since mine cost less than 50quid.

However, hopefully this will be a good way that linux can reach more people and convince the masses that there is an alternative to microsoft, so well done mr tesco!!!!!

  • ps, if you really need a 300gb hard drive then maybe it's time to delete the !!!!!!!!! Only kiddin. really, though, 300gb hard drives just mean you collect crap on your pc. size isnt everything, especially with linux.

the tesco machine is more than capable and openoffice is fab! more stable than msoffice and equally (if not more) user friendly. Only windows users need 1gbram, especially vista users cos of all the airy fairy nonsense that they design into it to make it look good and crash.

That is a very good idea and a very cheap way for many to access the internet.

A KVM switch is a hardware device that allows a user to control multiple computers from a single keyboard, video monitor and mouse.
