eco programe on washing machine

Options
my washing machine has an eco programme on it that I just don't understand. At 2 hrs and 15 minutes it's the longest programe and has the fastest spin. the manual tells me that because it takes longer it uses less energy??????????????????? The easycare takes just under an hour and the results are good but I don't know if I would be better off switching to the eco or if it's just a bit of con

  • On my dishwasher I stopped using the eco one as it took much longer than the 25 min rapid wash which is fine. I don't understand either - although the eco programme didn't dry the dishes so maybe it used less energy that way.

Our elec bill is stunningly high and I don't know why. I know why it's high but can't work out what makes it soooo high. I have got one of those energy monitors and have worked out the following costs (at 12.5p per kWh):

One load washing Quick (40deg, half hour) = 6.75p
One load washing Normal 30 degrees = 4p
One load washing Boil wash 95 degrees = 23p
One load tumble drier = 22p per hour

Most of the energy used in the washing machine seems to be to heating the water. Mine is cold fill only.
  • Eco on mine is also about 2 hours
