As halloween approaches i wondered if i could make some halloween treats for anyone who comes trick or treating at our door (my girls love giving the treats out though i wont let them do trick or treating themselves...i'm a mean mum). I'm also trying to save money too.
Anyway does anyone out there make sweets, biscuits etc to give? If so, what do you make?

I'm sure there was a thread on exactly this last year -you might find it on the celebrations and holidays board.

One year I made satsuma pumpkins for my kids -stick black paper eyes and noses onto satsumas so that they look like mini pumpkins.0 -
i make biscuits most of the time either gingerbread men or teddybears or a normal cut out biscuit recipe. These have always gone down well. Last year though i had a load of left over cheap halloween cups these i filled up with all the reduced halloween stuff i got the year before ( bugs and confetti etc) and put in a few of the penny sweets ands lollies i had lying around and gave each child a cup of goodies.Still TryingGrocery challenge July 2016

I just buy Tesco value midget gems at 28p a bag and give each child a few of those - might make a batch of small biccies this year instead - although I'm not sure it would be cheaper.“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

When my children were younger I didn't like the idea of them trick or treating, but I thought it would be nice for them to get some enjoyment out of halloween. So I started a tradition where each halloween we make a scary "model" to hold all the treats for when the trick or treaters come to the door.
In the past I have made a haunted house, crocodile and this monster is the only one I can find a photo of:

It's so easy to make. It's a box with the mouth and eyes shape cut out. Cover it in papier mache. Then green crepe paper. It can take quite a few days to dry so needs making in advance. An ideal half term project to do with the kids.
My kids will be trick or treating but I'll still make a model with them this year.
My local "Happy Days" store has an offer on halloween sweets so I have bought a couple of variety bags from there. Total cost £1.30:T*Thanks to all who posts comps * :j0 -
Thanks all, i think biscuits is a good idea, i wonder if i can make 'pumpkin' shape to cut round?0

Problem wiht homemade treats are that they aren't recommended that the kids eat them, 'just in case' someone puts something nasty in them. So your moneysaving may well be wasted if they are just thrown out by the kids' parents. I know I was never allowed to eat anything homemade, not even if we were given apples (razorblades).
I would jsut buy the cheapest bag of chocolates bars/candy you can find if you dont' want to spend too much.0 -
This isn't a recipe but I love doing it at Halloween.
I take a cardbox and decorate it with orange crepe paper and black cut-out halloween shapes to make it really festive. Then cut a hole in the bottom just large enough to fit your hand through
Fill the box with shredded paper (newspaper is fine but you could use coloured paper).
Do you see where I am going with this
When your trick or treaters arrive, answer the door with your arm poking through the hole but hidden by the shredded paper. Tell your victim that you have a 'lucky dip' box for them to choose what they would like and when they pop their hand inside "ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR" for all you are worth while grabbing their hand with yours and pulling it deep inside the box
Its sooooooooooooooooooo funny - they absolutely poop themselves :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
I do only tend to get the older ones with this - might be a bit mean to do it to little ones0
