Sell shares to pay off endowment shortfall?

We have an £89k mortgage shortfall. We can extend to pay it off, or sell some shares. We're both 55, I work part time and my wife full time. Our repayments would be around £700 a month, so it seems logical to me to pay the mortgage, especially as interest rates could go up. Our shares are a retirement nest-egg though, so it's a dilemma. Any comments please?

Would you trigger a Capital Gains charge if you were to sell the shares?0
