I had to do the same. I rented one of the special chairs. I also had the gas. Mine was very successful. I think I had to lay down for about a week. The specialist said the gas often causes a cataract in a couple of years because of the way it reacts with the lens.0 -
Please try and relax, its a very common operation with a huge success rate. They will not operate if your blood pressure is above the normal range of around 90/150 so please try and be laid back about the procedure.Lots of slow breathing is supposed to relax youI'm having cataract surgery on Friday and have got to the point where I'm panicking! Can anyone tell me what their post-op experiences were like, please?
It only takes approx 7 minutes to 11 minutes and you feel no pain at all .The most you will experience is very bright lights you can see as what I thought/ imagined what an LSD trip would be like. Try and keep calm and still whilst the operation is in progress
. The surgeons will prefer if you are awake rather than having a general anaesthetic .They find it easier to work on the eye I was told.
The nurse holds your hand ! and the surgeon has a good chat to you whilst its all going on, then you get your cup of tea and a biscuit and they let you go home (NHS ).
You have to add eye drops 4 times a day, two types of eyedrops, for around 2 weeks to keep the eye clean. The special eye patch they give can come off after a week.
If you have had poor vision you wont believe how bright and colourful the world is with a new lens.
The NHS will not do both eyes at the same time, has to be a gap of 6 weeks or so but I ve heard that private doctors will do both eyes at the same time
There is redness in the eye but that soon go s in a day or two and your vision improves in a few days.
Good luck, and relax, its an absolute doddle of an operation.0 -
How soon can you return to work after having your cataract done? I was assuming I would only need a day or two off?weight loss target 23lbs/49lb0

Depends on what you do and what your surgeon decides.
I had a coworker that took four weeks for each eye (we have paid sick leave) because she didn't want to risk lifting or getting hit by a patient.
If you stare at a monitor all day, our surgeons would give a note to be off at least a week. Same for people who work in dusty environments, don't want to run the risk of infection.
Basically, ask your doctor.0 -
If you stare at a monitor and have a monofocal distance lens fitted you'll need to wait until your reading prescription has been decided.0

Thanks. I teach so think that is a safe enough environment. Can't imagine being off 4 weeks.weight loss target 23lbs/49lb0

I have had both eyes done and no problems. I am a scaredy cat with anything surgical so the nurse suggested I be given a sedative as well as a local and I didn't feel a thing - I was away with the fairies so not sure what they gave me :-)
Since then if I have anything of a minor surgical procedure which might not bother some people, I just ask for a sedative, so if anybody is at all worried just ask. No surgeon wants a quivering wreck on his table to deal with!0
