Does my Beauty routine sound OK?

:hello: everyone

I haven't really spent much time looking after my skin, and now that I am over 40 HA Ha and have developed some lines and feeling quite old I need to address this urgently. :(

I bought some beauty items recently and this is my routine since last week:

Boots Facial Cleansing Wipes, then Simply Skin Toner followed by Garnier Ambre Solaire Sheer Protect Factor 30 Hydrating Face Protection Cream ( I bought this during the summer for £2 reduced from about £8 and I would like to make use of it! (I am using this as a moisturiser)

Now I would also like to try Protect and perfect so do i apply this after the moisturiser??

Hope some knowledgeable beauty-savvy people can help me.

Thanks so much in advance

Fiona

    Hi Booky, well....

Firstly the disposable face wipes are great if you're camping or on holiday but they wouldn't be my first choice for a cleanser. If your skin is getting a little drier with age then try a cream cleanser - put a small amount onto your hands, and gently massage into warm damp skin then rinse off with warm water (never cold or hot this could lead to broken veins) I then apply moisturiser to skin that is still a little damp. Make sure you cleanse & moisturise the throat area too.

I'm not sure on the product you're using as a moisturiser, sounds great if you work outside but if you spend your days indoors this my be a bit OTT. Have a look next time you're in Boots at the range of moistursiers for your skin type, your age & any specific problems you have. You dont have to spend a fortune on a face cream IMHO, but i guess thats personal choice.

Personally I use a really cheap cream cleanser because I figure you wash it straight off anyway and I'm using a Avon moistursier currently (mum got BOGOF and gave me the freebie!!!) but I often use a pure home made face oil due to the amount of chemical rubbish they put in creams.

    Hope this helps!

  • Im not an expert either, but have spent £100 on beauty products over the years !!

Im 36 and had a baby 5 months ago, so my skin has gone abit heywire since then, I swear by dermoligica products, expensive yes but really do deliver. I buy from jersey so no vat to pay.

I use on a daily basis, cleanser, gentle daily exfoliator, toner then moisturiser then eye cream. It sounds loads but im keeping the wrinkles at bay ! I also swear by nivea for body care, esp the neck and chest area. Maybe use an eye cream as well as the eyes are the first thing to go wrinkled.

The protect serum you were asking about goes over your moisturiser, just need abit it goes along way.

Gosh I do sound vain with all this pampering dont I, but I do get compliments on my skin, I also use benefit cosmetics which make a difference as well.

  • Hi booklover,

I used to work as a beauty therapist for 5 years and look after my skin obssesionally..i'd love to give you some advice.

The three most important products you can put on your skin are cleanser, eye cream and moisturiser.

Cleanser - Think about how much sweat/dirt and pollution fumes come into contact with our skin every day. If all the dirt and grime doesn't get cleaned thoroughly off the skin, pores will be blocked, spots will appear and the skin will look really dull. I would recommend that you use a cream cleanser. Don't use a foaming facial wash - it dries the skin out and people think because it foams up the skin is getting clean (it's actually all the chemicals reacting). Apply the cream cleanser to dry skin, add a couple of drops of water and massage thoroughly (for about 30 secs). Then rinse with clean water, you can also wipe some damp cotton wool pads over the face to ensure all the cleanser is off. (Those wipes are crap - i would say don't use them, they're a lazy option and you might as well as put a baby wipe on your face).
Also, think about it like this - you can spend a fortune on an expensive moisturiser but if it's not being applied to a clean face, what's the point? It will just glaze over the grease on the skin and won't penetrate into the pores and work effectively so the cleansing routine is the foundations of an effective skincare routine.

    Eye cream
The skin around the eye is very delicate compared to the rest of our skin and needs extra hydration. No 1 rule - NEVER pull the skin around the eyes. When taking off eyemakeup, saturate your cotton wool pad with eyemakeup remover (if it isn't completely lubricated, it will pull all the skin). Very gently start from the inside corner of the eye and sweep the wet pad in an anti clockwise direction around the eye till make up is removed. Then apply an eye cream (as you're over 40, make sure you use one designed for wrinkles, not puffiness or dark circles). Put a tiny bit onto each fourth finger and start from under the inside corner of the eye (next to the bridge of your nose) and pat gently working towards the hair line (this is also drawing the toxins out to the pressure points). SOme people also like to pat a bit under the eyebrows - again working outwards towards the hair line.

    Moisturiser
It's great you're using SPF protection here. Every woman should be using a moisturiser with at least an SPF 2O - the sun is still there on what appears to be a cloudy day. Really check those ingredients on the label - the better it smells, the more chemicals there probably are. Beware of retinol - it thins the skin (so don't buy anything from ROC). If you can afford it buy a night cream, our skin repairs itself at double the speed over night and cleanse with cream cleanser am and pm. A facial oil is a nice treat once a week too. Also sleeping on a satin pillowcase helps prevent wrinkles (sounds bizarre but it works) Don't forget to moisturiser the neck and bust area as well.

A big misconception is spending money on brands like Chanel, Dior, Estee Lauder. They're expensive so they must be good - right? NO you are paying for the name and look at all the sulphates, and other chemicals on them, they're full of them. With skincare the more natural the better.

Below is my top five brands and believe me I've tested and used hundreds over the years.

REN - natural and quite reasonable.
    Liz Earle - similar.
Elemis - quite pricey and not as natural as REN.
    Darphin - very expensivee
Botanics @ boots - probably the best budget, plant based skincare range.

Also, a face mask once a week and a gentle scrub twice a week will benefit the skin too. Apply all the above rules, the more natural the better.

I am very careful with my money and was before I joined the site. I'm the type of person that will walk an extra 15 mins to park in a free car park rather than pay 50p an hour!! However, I do think it's worth spending a fair bit on skincare. We wouldn't put coke into our cars engine so don't put crap on your face.

Other tips - what you feed your body will show on your face. A good diet with plenty of fresh fruit and veg and wholegrain foods.
2 litres of water a day (a !!!!!! I know but you will notice the difference)
    8 hours sleep a night.
    Happiness and laughter helps too.
If you can afford it have a facial once a month/every two months at a salon. Your skin will thank you for it and it's time out for you.
I also go to my local college and have beauty treatments from the students. Pedicures and manicures for £4. Their facial ranges are normally quite basic and from beauty wholesalers but as a starting point - they're better than nothing.

Sorry to go on, once I start I can't stop, if you want any more info please pm me.
