Gas supplier won't delivery LPG - help!

Hi there

I've got an issue with our LPG supplier Calor Gas. We are not able to receive mains gas at our property so have it supplied to our LPG tank. Normally when our tank gets to about 25% the telemetry system supplied by Calor alerts them we are running out and we get a new delivery. On Saturday we completely ran out of gas and since then it has been an ordeal trying to get hold of Calor to order new fuel.

Despite on Saturday being told we would receive an emergency delivery on Sunday, nothing arrived and now we are into Monday. Two and a half hours on the phone today and i've been told that we need to wait 7-10 days for delivery. We have no heat, no hot water, no way of using our gas stove/cooker. We also have two young children in the house.

I've spoken to about 5 representatives from Calor now, none of them have been particularly helpful or sympathetic and i'm at my wits end. I've been told that the telemetry is working and that they were aware we were running out of gas but nobody called to tell us (we could have started using the heating more sparingly had we known!).

Can anyone help advise what are rights are or what we can do about this...I've asked to speak to a manager and have been refused. I can't see how it can leave a family we young children with no heat/water/cooking facilities for over a week?

I would think with the recent weather the gas people are run off their feet / lorries trying to catch up.

Can you go some where locally and hire a heater of some sort?
Can you buy some gas bottle and use that / hire the right appliances?
Can you all move to relations for a few days?

You still have electricity I take it? Do you have electric kettle? Hot water. Beg or borrow heaters from friends and family,do you have a microwave if not they don't cost very much.
There are people who are worse off then you, no electricity or water. The services are stretched at the moment, there is nothing they can do. You have to take control of your own situation.

As you know you will use gas during the winter, I suggest next year you have adequate in you tank to last at least a fortnight! Not what you want to hear, but I recall this beast from the east was noted in the news five or six days prior to it landing!

I can sympathise with your situation, and the following advice is a bit late :( but the most important thing to take from this is not to rely on technological solutions. When it works it is great, but when it fails it can be a disaster.

Get into the habit of checking the tank contents yourself from time to time, especially if bad weather is forecast. If it is important to you (which having a warm home is with a family) then don't trust a machine and other people to look out for you.

The same goes for 'smart' gas and electric meters - sadly people are being encouraged to get one and then trust them unconditionally to send accurate meter readings to the supplier. Some people are going to find that trust is seriouly misplaced.

Hope you get a delivery soon! :)

As above. To take responsibility is to take control. Or you can just complain it is all someone else's fault and suffer the consequences.

Out of interest how long does a tank last you? If it's a decent length of time then try and make sure that your top ups span winter rather than falling in the middle (admittedly this cold snap was a bit of a surprise).

    Could Flogas refill the tank?
