Has anyone had any experience in working abroad as a TEFL teacher.

I am thinking about taking a CELTA course, which I understand is the best one. I have no EFL teaching experience, but I volunteer once a week helping refugees, asylum seekers etc with their English. The only other teaching experience I have had is lecturing at a university.
I would like to teach English in the middle east.
I am not bothered about making a fortune as I would still have income in the UK even if I left the country, but I would like to cover my living and accommodation expenses.
I would probably be about 59 - 60 when I wanted to do it.

Am I completely wasting my time taking the CELTA course as no one would employ me at my age anyway?
