Pension discharged bankrupt

I was discharged from bankruptcy in 1998 I hold a pension with the PRU. Before, within and after my bankruptcy period monies have been paid into this policy, some of which by the government via the SERPS payment system. The PRU are advising that they are unable to pay any funds to me. They advise that they protected the money whilst I was bankrupt. 20 years on, they now advise I cannot access any part of the fund. Albeit I can nominate a third party to receive my money!!! Anyone had a similar conundrum? Thanks in advance.
