Help needed on self employment

Think I am just a bit dippy today and need clarification.....lol
Was self employed for a few years but gave it up in 2014 and got a "normal" job. Now needing to register again and can't remember.....am I right in thinking that anything earned between last April (17) and this April (18), I will have up to end of year to do my self assessment on line? Or have I just got confused?
I won't be earning enough to pay tax, even added to my "normal" employed job, but obviously want to declare it and pay NI.
Thanks in advance

so do I need to tell them now that I am doing this self employed job now? Or do I just wait till its time to fill in the assessment? Also can I set up the DD for NI now? I just seem to be confused and can't remember what I did before. I still have my UTR reference. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. ooh, just read on another site that you can no longer pay NI by DD...is that correct? Says you have to pay yearly once you submit your assessment....This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
