This is one of my flower borders. I have bought just 3 of the plants in here. Everything else grown from free or saved seed, received as gifts or swaps or divided from stuff I already own. It can be done.

I've added it to my watch list for a future present idea.  I love the Bay of E for second hand books.  I bought a slow cooker book the other day for £2.09 including postage!  It's so good and the book was in really good condition.  Better than these books all being pulped or going to landfill too.  I've always preferred second hand books to new though and spent many a happy hour as a child in a second hand bookshop.

And this one. I just bought the michaelmas daisy clump for some autumn colour about 18 years ago. Gardening doesn't have to be one big garden centre cash spraying spree. I've done my share of that in the past but my garden didn't look as pretty as it does now, so am sticking with my more traditional frugal methods now. F x

@Humdinger1 - The only reason I haven't gone into details re the un-swallowable neverending frog is that it is just SO tedious, I think I could expire from ennui before committing as far as the 2nd sentence of the damn saga to print. Just hoping there will be good news about it on Tues & I can then deliver someone a b*ll*cking. I am placid & good humoured up to a point, but once that line has been breached, I am not a good person to be 'on the wrong side of' (which is poor English, but you know what I mean)

@foxgloves please get on with your books!  You have a ready-made audience here; I can imagine you starting a whole new genre!!  Redemption/coming-of-age/comic interspersed with existential/political reflections.   Maybe with a bit of thriller thrown in? There's a trilogy right there...love Humdinger x

Love your garden pics. Re the free plants, we have a new little seed swap house opened.  We have lots of the houses for books locally but first seed one
