I was always told that in salt water the bugs would float up to the top but in plain water they might just drown in the fruit. Maybe an old wives tale though. All that clutter used to be money8

Hi Foxgloves and Gang
How are you all? I vaguely remember my mum filling the glass bottles that had sweets in before, with Runner Beans with Salt in between each layer and thats how she kept them in her larder over winter. Can any of you remember this?. Our Lounge is all finished and our furniture is back😁😁 I was sat in my chair last night doing my knitting and watching TV. At last we are picking our own runner beans, courgettes and tomatoes, we are always late picking ours. I had a Anxiety attack on Sunday evening, don't know why but it was scary.!!!. Dinner is ready, off I toodle. Take Care and Keep Safe my lovelies xMortgage free September 2021. Narrowboat brought October 2021

I think there's probably some sense in that, as very light things like insects & grubs would float in salty water. There's often a grain of truth in a lot of these Grandma sayings. I sometimes got bad chilblains in winter when I was a child & my Gran told me that her mother used to tell them to use their wee to soothe chilblains. I never tried this but remember pondering how easy it would be to wee on one's affected toes. Of course when I asked Gran how she & her sisters achieved this, she said they just dipped them in their overnight chamber pot, lol. Needless to say, my chilblains were left to recover on their own! I think lots of these bits of old wives' tales/Grandma sayings have an element of truth in them. I can see that the blackberry/salt thing would work.

Hello Diary Friends,
I do hope nobody has actually blown away in these strong winds. It isn't cold here at all, but it's soooo windy. Town first thing for the market. Spent around £12 less on our fresh fruit & veg this week because we are using such a lot of our home grown stuff. Also treated myself to a bunch of purple freesias because they looked so pretty.
Cleaned the house, fed sourdough jar ready to bake tomorrow & made a cauldron of tomato soup - the recipe from the old Cranks book, which I have made for about 3 decades now. My nephews used to love it when they were little (& not so little!)
Builder has been round to measure up, so it really feels like it's happening now.
Today's pickings:
600g french beans
3 kg windfall apples
Going to stop for a bowl of soup & cheese on toast now.

Foxgloves and any other keen gardeners there was an item on the radio tonight that some home grown courgettes are causing nausea and diarrhoea. Apparently there is too much of a naturally occurring chemical in some of them. According to the reporrt they dont taste right so all be careful.

Pixiehouse55 - Sorry to hear about your anxiety attack. They are horrible, aren't they? Hope you are feeling better now.
Yes, I do know about salting runner beans to preserve them, but I've never tried it because I expect domestic freezers have replaced the practice. I always like reading about these old methods though.
