Low productivity in the digital age

I wonder if the disproportionate influence of the City has an undue influence in these figures. I see a lot of hard-working people being made to chase impossible targets, so think maybe the productivity figures reflect a statistical change such as FTSE or currency values rather than inefficient workers.0

Aren't we British a funny lot. Consider the following statements we habitually applaud;
+ I believe in a society with a better work / life balance
+ Life is so much better here (Spain, France, Italy), it's slower paced, people have proper lunch breaks, they get to see their kids grow-up and that's why I hope Ch4 can help us find a place in the sun
Life is better for well-off people who move to Spain / France / Italy in order to do less work and live off their savings or inherited money. Or high-earning professionals who can live wherever they like without worrying about paying the bills. There are plenty of stressed Spanish / French / Italians.0 -

I'm not on about better off people with capital. I see loads of 'New Life In The Sun' type shows where the protagonists say they want the better work / life balance found abroad 'where people have 2 hour lunches'.
There's one I was watching last week when snowed in where this kept being said. These were people setting up a new working life, NOT semi or fully retired.
So I'm confused. We're told we need to produce more per hour (productivity), yet we're also told in endless articles how we work too hard and should aspire to a better work / life balance.Restless, somebody pour me a vino.0
