Accrue holidays if a new starter? (civil service)

I seem to find online that places operate differently. Does anyone know if the civil service make you accrue holidays at a certain rate per month or if they are just available from the start?

I have had a holiday booked for a while in May. I start the job end of the March. I'm just hoping I'll have five days worth of holidays to take. The business manager for me to contact is away for a fortnight so I will ask her eventually. We had to write down booked holidays at the interview but only in the next three months so the May holiday didn't apply at the time.

It's DWP if it makes any difference.

  • When I was at the MoD you could take the holiday before you had earnt it.

It would be a very generous leave entitlement which gave you a week's worth of leave in May if you only start at the end of March, especially as you have four bank holidays to deal with - Good Friday, Easter Monday, and the two May holidays.

However, the only way to know whether you'll be able to take it as paid leave is to ask. And tbh it's easier to let payroll go through as paid leave than make it unpaid, IMO.

In all probability it will go through as paid leave. The only time a problem would occur is if you left employment immediately after the holiday as you would have taken more than you would have accrued at that time. Any overpayment would be recovered from your final pay.
  • Civil service allows you to anticipate up to ten days annual leave at any point (subject to line management approval); then holiday accrues at an even rate across the year. So the original poster is OK provided the leave dates are approved.
  • Thanks all - I have no problem taking it unpaid if I need to, I was just wondering how it worked. I'll have to e-mail her and ask about it. Hopefully if I tell her ASAP it will be fine. I'm a little worried about the six days I need off for my masters degree but they aren't in a block and are spread out so hopefully would have been accrued.

Just let your line manager know as soon as possible. Events organised before you joined DWP would normally be accommodated, but don't spring it on them at the last moment.
The only problem area might be if formal training has already been organised and has to be rescheduled. That could affect your progress within the job.
