Mortgage Employer Reference

Hope someone can help. I am awaiting a mortgage offer from a Building Society. They sent a reference request to my HR Manager on 6th February and so far he has not returned it.

I emailed him on 15th February and he told me that he would send it the next day. I have been onto the mortgage company all this week and they have also been in touch with him.

Yesterday he said to them he "thinks" he sent it. I called him several times but he did not answer. He was supposed to resend it yesterday afternoon but as yet nothing is showing.

My question is: Does my employer have to provide a reference, especially now that they have said they would? Is there an acceptable time limit for this? Could it be classed as victimisation (I had a bit of a spat with him during a disciplinary where i was the accompanying employee).

Many thanks

  • Why have they referred your application to your employer in the first instance? Is there some ambiguity in regards to your salary? Have you not been there long or currently in a probation period?

No, was asked for after I had sent in payslips etc. The amount is well within my affordability and I’ve been with my employer 15 years.

I thought maybe it was because I’m going to rent out my current property but why wait until everything else had been sorted?

I get paid 4 weeks, 4 weeks, 5 weeks every month and a bonus in June. Could it be that the payslip I sent was for 4 weeks?

Either way, I can’t see why it has taken three weeks and he still hasn’t returned the form. Is he legally obliged to do so?

It is standard practise to ask an employer to confim salary details on a mortgage application.
