    I'm of the mind it's not Lake Bala at all, I think it's Llyn Trawsfynydd (also in Snowdonia). My evidence / reasoning:

    The clue: 'This watery spot in the heart of a national park has both hidden depths and cultural roots. It's a place associated with poetry and power, and can be found "amid mountains".'

    * Llyn Trawsfynydd is a lake in the middle of Snowdonia National Park
    * It is a partly-artificial lake made by drowning a valley ('hidden depths and cultural roots'?)
    * There's a war memorial with a poem to local men killed in WWI ('poetry')
    * It was flooded for hydroelectrical power generation and then later the late water was also used for cooling a nuclear power station ('power')
    * Trawsfynydd means 'amid mountains'

    Facts courtesy of https://www.discoveringbritain.org/activities/wales/viewpoints/lake-trawsfynydd.html, where I think they got their clueing from

    Finally this Google Streetview link shows the power station, which is the same structure seen on the competition page, I think:

    Can't get the exact same angle on streetview, after all the editor was rambling not driving, but it's near enough that I'm convinced.
