Avocados - lucky dip ?

I only buy avocados as an 'unexpected' treat, and rather a lottery. I never plan to buy them. If I see some that seem as if they might be OK, I buy them, assuming that I'll have to let them ripen a bit, and if they are past their best, I'll make guacamole. Sometimes they're awful, and that's part of the lottery!
But I am retired, and have a decent store cupboard, and manage my spending fairly easily. When I was on a tight budget I almost never bought avocados, even if they looked like a bargain.0 -
I like the Aldi ripen-at-home ones. 4 in a pack and it works out much cheaper than buying a pack of 2 ready to eat ones. I keep an eye on them and try and judge which one is ready to eat first by the look of the stem and if it "gives" to a gentle squash.
