I know, be thankful for the job

The "be grateful for a job" line is the laziest response from posters on these boards. Pretty much every "should I change job" thread has somebody mutter those words. The entire labour market and our economy would grind to a halt if everyone just put up with the status quo!
You know yourself what you're worth and what the market is doing in your area. Getting a new job requires effort and hurdles but can be the best decision given the circumstances.0 -
Thinking outside the box... If they won't negotiate on take-home, negotiate on them paying for the certificates you don't have (including some study time). Then use those certs to negotiate a pay rise in a years time - or take them elsewhere for a better salary.I need to think of something new here...0

He can't negotiate on anything if he isn't prepared to walk if they don't concede it. It seems that he isn't, because he doesn't think he can get anything better. If he doesn't think he can get anything better, he's in no position to negotiate and the company will know that.0

Well it is completely true, more so with the bigger picture (just think what the job market would be like in Syria right about now).
But there is a difference between "being grateful" and being happy. You can be grateful for a job whilst still hating it with a passion and seek alternative employment in the meantime. It is a bit of a lazy response in that it is so quick and generic to say, but it does have strong elements of truth to it. Frankly, it helps ground me when I'm peeved off with work. The entire labour market and our economy would grind to a halt if everyone just put up with the status quo!
This bit is throwing me. I'd have thought that people putting up with the status quo would HELP the labour market and economy to continue going.
I'd have thought that people NOT accepting the status quo would have the potential for it to grind to a halt, because effectively more people wouldn't be taking up the jobs.
Mind you, the market would evolve to compensate for either scenario. You know yourself what you're worth and what the market is doing in your area. Getting a new job requires effort and hurdles but can be the best decision given the circumstances.
