Advice for work please.

Hello all new to this - advice needed bit low actually.

Secondary science teacher trained, worked in primary. Was in school 10 yrs made redundant. Managed education teams and was multiple school Governor. Currently working on supply on long term role since Oct 2015. Totally unsure of what to do and whether I should retrain - 47 now / is that old? Not sure if I can get back into education. Taught science, maths , IT. GCSE & A level.

Got PGCE secondary science, BSc biochemistry, MA education, MSc computing and maths, MSc toxicology Prince 2, ITIL management quals.

37 other quals but I feel totally useless. Self esteem non existent after redundancy and feel ashamed. Applied for a couple of teacher roles and not given as last one gave to NQT. If I got out of education what could I do.

Supply making me feel worthless and feel like I’m scrounging for a days pay. Careers advice for over 18s is rubbish in my opinion.

I’m desperate to get out of supply - Any help please? I’m sure you can help.

My wife found a job teaching 'other than in school' - so teaching very sick children, school refusers, excluded children and the like, in small groups and thoroughly enjoyed it compared to being a head of year which was more like riot control.

Perhaps you could work in a college with a focus on adult education, assuming that your qualifications would be valid...?

Why do you feel worthless doing supply work?
  • I feel worthless as:

It!!!8217;s only temporary, it!!!8217;s only a day or weekly, termly pay. I feel that people label you as a failure because your doing supply. When your not working the world keeps turning and your just not part of anything secure.

Being made redundant practically killed me. Supply forced me out there and pays my mortgage but I want something different. I actually qualified in 1995 from Edge Hill so taught a lot. I feel I!!!8217;ve wasted those years and for what now.

Sorry to darken your days - thank you for reading.

I'd say that the 'labelling' is their issue, not yours. If you're being kept on doing supply work, it does tend to suggest that whoever you work for values you...

I don't know a lot about the "market" for teachers but would have thought that you need to apply for more than a "couple" of permanent roles? I know that my ex went to probably 5 or 6 interviews before she was made an offer...
  • Yes you are right. Being more proactive rather than moaning about my lot or lack of it will help!

I do need to apply more in general but it’s hard to motivate yourself.

    Thank you for replying.

Get yourself over to the TES forum, you'll find many teachers who understand your feelings and can offer suggestions of where to go next.

Have you had a chance to talk through your feelings post-redundancy? It sounds as if it's affecting you badly, possibly even spiralling into depression? You're still the same person: if you were able to 'hear' that, it might help.

To add to the links already given, I've heard that 'What colour is your parachute' is a useful book for working out what you might want to do.
