Help getting a mortgage.

Hi all.
Over the years I’ve been pretty bad with my finances. Now I’ve decided to sort it out and work on my credit rating.
I checked on this site regarding a credit card and I’ll probably get refused due to a recent CCJ.
I understand this will take time to get right and I’m willing to take the steps necessary to get a mortgage.
Now, how do I start on building my rating back up? It’s like 180 if that which is embarrassing.
What else do I need to bare in mind when applying for a mortgage?
Thanks.
