Child's Party for £30

Am I a cheapskate?

My DD is having a party for her 6th birthday tomorrow.
It has cost me

Pass the Parcel - Barbie Magnets 99p
-Stamper Pens 99p (between the layers)
Pass the Parcel - Stickers & Album 99p
-Scrunchies 99p (between the layers)
Game Prizes - Cadbury Mini Treats BOGOF £2.99
Pick 'n' mix celebrations for consolation £3.11 (my only real extravagance could have done - bag of wrapped sweets from 99p shop)
Party Bag Gifts 9 @ 99p £8.91 (craft pack)
Chicken Nuggets £1.00
Sausages £1.50
Baked Beans 20p
Chips £1.16
Ice Cream 55p
Sauces (left over from DD1s party)
Birthday Cake (estimate) £3.50 (max incl decorations)
£31.38

plus there will be chips/nuggets/sausages left for another meal.
I anticiapte only opening one pack of treat bars so take off £1.50 brings to under £30.

It will be a traditional party with proper games. Parent's are still telling me how much their children enjoyed last years. Only downside is it is a bit more hassle than just booking MacDonalds.

  • sounds good to me!

My daughters 7th birthday party cost me about £30 too (for 8 kids plus sister) and that included a Mc Donalds happy meal each and a party bag.

    10 x Happy Meals - £19.99

    Birthday pack (8x bags, 8x water toys, 8x skooshies, 8x stickers, 8x activity books, 8x keyrings) from ebay - £6 incl. p+p

PAck of choclate bars (like kitkats) 69p. I actually removed the paper wrappers, then printed my own with a pic of the birthday girl on them, saying "thanks for coming to ******'s party" and stuck those on instead

    Birthday cake - £3.50 ish

Pass the parcel prizes - pack of felt tips (99p each)

The kids had a brilliant time!

Fancy my foot. For older children (well for girls anyway), small number (max 5) for sleepover. Let them make their own pizzas. Stick them in front of a DVD with some popcorn. Send them to bed.
Read the riot act (after midnight I threaten to call their parents if they don't shut up)

If you're lucky you get a reasonable nights sleep.

Sounds like a good party to me!

I remember my own parties as a kid

My mum would put out some party food, blow up some balloons and set us loose in the garden (whatever the weather) She would plan easy games like pass the parcel/musical statues etc etc but we only ever played them if the riotus play seemed to be flagging lol

I'm planning a party like this for my dd who will be 5 in dec. However, are you doing an after school thing or a Saturday party? I was thinking about doing it after school at the end of term - but this has been met with surprise by most everyone I've told!

    Hi Full-time-mum

My daughter is 8 tomorrow and I'm having a similar party. It's only because I've been visiting this site for so long, I have come to learn how to be frugal and realise that it's not what you buy or where you buy it from that counts, it's the fact that we will spend some good quality time together, playing silly games, having fun and just enjoying ourselves, hopefully giving my daughter some good memories as well.

    Have a good day!

    Two points,
    1. picking the end of term can mean difficulty with all the birthday girl's friends going away.
    2. The children will be very very tired and fractious.
    We've just done 11am - 1pm, again for 2 reasons, well 3 really.
    1. They eat at a normal meal time so you don't get waste
    2. Being early, they are not tired and are, hopefully, better behaved.
    3. OH went to football at 1:30!
Today's party went really well, we managed 9 x 5-6year olds between the 2 of us with the help of DD1 (11). It would have been slightly easier if my Mum could have come and taken care of the kitchen but it wasn't disasterous not having an extra pair of hands.

Actually, the hardest thing was getting the children to stay seated whilst the others finished eating. I don't think many families sit down at table let alone practise good manners. On the plus side, one of the young guests specifically got my attention whilst I was serving, looked me straight in the eye and said "Thank You" - made my day!

Glad to hear that it went so well :) Because my dd's birthday is on the 28th dec (mine on 29th!) I was thinking if we had it on the last day, more would come but I think I will probably do as you have and have a 11-1pm party as it's over lunch, they will be in good moods (hopefully!) and Sophia can then recover for the rest of the day (actually, who am I kidding, I mean I can recover/have a dirnk lol).
