Staying blonde without it costing a fortune??

As above - I have tried using home products which seems to work well the first time but when it comes to doing roots or maintaining, I get all sorts of weird and wonderful colours and it all just looks a bit flat colour-wise. If I find one colour I like, it never seems to look right the second time around :( and just lifting my roots then putting a full head of colour on the whole head to even it out and ending up with grey or green.. arghhh

It costs me just under £80 at the moment with student discount but that does get me a few different blondes/light browns put through my hair and it's obviously cheaper when I get a half head done but I really prefer just getting a full head.

It makes me sad when I think that I spend (although I haven't this year, hello roots and greys) that much money but it just looks cheap when I do it myself.

Any advice?
Just trying to make up for past mistakes and work towards the future I want :hello:

Why not shave your head? - Then it can be any colour you like, for next to nothing!

If your local college has a hairdressing course, you could enquire about being a model for students to practise on. The students are supervised so you'll get good results but at a reduced price.

Some people will tell you about your "local hairdressing college" - and you might find that when you investigate that in your area the prices are just as expensive as a the salon you're complaining about ....

I tried that where I live - still £70 for streaking.

But then I looked in other areas/towns/counties and found that there's a College about 30-40 miles from me that does it for about £30. And I figured that I could make that a feature day out as it's cheaper to drive there/back and pay £30 than to walk over the road and pay £70.

So, it's worth looking outside the immediate/obvious area.

Well I've just had a look at the college in my town has a few campus sites, the one here doesn't but the one the next town over does have one and it's only £30 for a full head, and around £3 train fare so works out a lot cheaper! I've never thought of that! I think I will give it a go :j

Agreed - it totals £33 with travel to go to the one in the next town. Much much cheaper! Have you always had good results?

I have used colleges for years and found them to be very good and the prices low compared with salons. The only thing you should be aware of is that they can be time consuming as they are, naturally, much slower.

I have also used their beauty department for pedicures. Our local college charges £7 for a basic pedicure and £10 for one with warm wax or hot bootees. My feet felt and looked just as good as a very expensive salon.

The one near me only has sessions at certain times of year, so that's something to be aware of. You can't just book an appointment. There's nothing at all from when the colleges break up for the summer until about October when the new term has got properly up and running.

What's your natural colour? Is staying blonde essential? Darker colours are much easier to maintain cheaply!
