As I suggested before, don't be shy about suggesting your guest brings their own food - most will not be offended, and in fact may be relieved, firstly because they won't want to put you to a lot of trouble, and secondly because if they bring their own, they *know* it's vegan.

    Honey isn't vegan.
There are differing views on this I believe - as it doesnt involve killing a living being.

Just in case others stumble across this and are unsure, honey is not vegan, as vegans don't eat/use anything that comes from animals. It's not something that vegans tend to disagree on, although you may find some who call themselves 'vegan' and eat honey just as you may find 'vegetarians' who eat fish.
  • I know some people who describe themselves as 'vegan' when eating away from home - but will use their own eggs and honey as they are certain about welfare standards. I personally don't see that as contradictory - more them wanting to be helpful.
I usually ask people 'what does that mean?'- not because I am unclear about vegetarian / vegan 'official' standards, but because a lot of people these days are a bit more elastic than they used to be. Muslims and Jews who eat at my home usually say 'treat me as vegetarian' because it is easier than worrying about religious dietary laws.

In my friend's case, she got fed up with saying she was pescatarian, and having people look at her like she'd swallowed the dictionary. It was some years ago though, I think the term "pescatarian" is more widely known now.

Some super ideas on this thread, and although I'm vegetarian, not vegan, I think I shall be trying some of them in the coming weeks/months. :o

I find that odd. Veggie food isn't necessarily halal or kosher. I much prefer it if people just state their needs and if I need help I'll ask them!

I do understand that people borrow terms to make things easier, but in a thread like this when discussing a vegan meal, it's not helpful to muddy the waters. If somebody says they are vegan, I think we should assume that they don't eat honey, which is why I pointed out that honey isn't vegan. Better to be safe than sorry by and with the standard definition rather than odd exceptions.
  • Honey isn't vegan.
Why is it not vegan? Only because bees gather it?

Very easy pudding (vegan or otherwise) for unexpected guests:

Warm canned peach halves up on the hob adding a generous splash of brandy. Serve with vegan ice cream.

    Opinions on that vary.

I think some vegans are okay about it - because it doesnt involve killing an animal/fish/etc afaik (whether it's directly or indirectly so). The bee is still alive - even if its honey has been taken.

Quite likely being fed on sugar - rather than being able to eat its own honey for sustenance. But that is a bit of a different story.
