Usage of time while on strike

Hi,
I was wondering how free is the time spent by an employee on strike?
Assuming that while a union member he participates on a strike, is he allowed to attend a job interview while he is on strike?
Is the on-strike-time at employee's disposal as annual leave is?
Thank you in advance :-)

Yes, but bear in mind that the union might call the strike off at the last minute, in which case you'd have to go to work, so don't make any plans you can't unmake.
Also the union might expect you to do stuff eg picket if you want strike pay.0 -

Do any unions actually pay 'strike pay' any more?0 -
There is a major University strike coming up, and I'm not striking myself, but my husband is. I plan to leave him a list of jobs to do around the house
More seriously, he isn't getting paid for strike days, so I take that to mean he is 'free' to do what he wants to do. He's also made a contribution to the hardship fund - they do still exist but this one pays a maximum of £50 per day.0 -
I believe the RMT have made payments of between £150-£200 to their members for the strikes they have been on. The amount seems to vary for each train company0

What did you vote on? Have your union told you what & when the action is? Is it full withdrawal of labour or something short of it like work to rule?
You may like to chat to colleagues to find out what they intend to do to gauge their reaction to your plan/ find out what the normal behaviour is.
As Zagfles advises above, collective action often has the effect of galvanising management to address the problem and hand and action if called off. Also, sometimes, the company may take legal action to prevent the collective action.
So don't bank on being able to go on an interview until the day itself.Originally Posted by shortcrust
