  • If your tied to a minimum subscription/contract you can't just cancel a direct debit.

    stacey21 is correct.

If you are tied to a minimum term, and you cancel your direct debit within that period, you are still liable for the payment. Even if they do not chase you for this payment straightaway, they may do so at any time within the next six years.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • if you cancel the direct debit and they do not send any further magazines how can they charge you? they have not incurred any more costs, so how can they chase you for payment? anyway in my experience i have done many of these offers and cancelled before the end and never had any problems, in fact i have had offers from these companies to resubscribe at any time.

however please bear in mind that this is only in my experience

and also the direct debit guarantee

and that this offer is now closed so should be moved

They can charge you because you entered into a contract. If you cancel the direct debit you are in breach of contract. Therefore they can sue you for the money if they choose to.

It sounds like in your case they have just cancelled the subscription rather than chasing up the debt. However, I would not recommend that others do this. Would you like to be the one responding to their post when they have missed payments showing up on their credit reports, or even worse, a CCJ?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • if you read my post correctly i said in my experience, i did not recommend this to others. if you go onto the magazine thread on the shop but don't drop board you will see many have the same experience as me.

i also worked in banking and know how the direct debit guarantee works

  • also when i cancel the direct debit i have also sent them an email stating i do not wish to continue this subscribtion and have always been responded to favourably, inviting me to resubscribe at any time.

  • The Direct Debit guarantee is primarily for mistakes and errors, not for someone wanting to get out of a subscription/contract. Yes, you are quite right, under the Direct Debit Guarantee you can cancel a DD at any time, but in the case of a contract/subscription you would need to have another payment method set up.

  • stacey21 thanks for your reply, but this is turning into a debate, which isn't what this board is for. this offer is ended and should no longer be replied to and moved by mods. as i have stated this is my experience and you will find others with similar experiences on the magazine thread. i am not encouraging anyone to get in debt:eek: . when i have cancelled such a direct debit as this, i have never been asked for alternative payment options they have always cancelled with no problems.
