Employees of self employed person

Myself and two others are currently employed by a self employed trader. He's not far off retirement age and has been making noises recently about closing up the business when the time comes.
Just wondered where we as employees stand. I know if it was a Ltd firm we would have to be made redundant and paid the appropriate redundancy pay but can't seem to find any information for employees of a self employed person. Would he be able to just pick a day to close up and we'd be out of work or would we be entitled to some payout? Trying to decide if it's worth starting to look for other work now rather than be potentially left without pay when the inevitable happens. Thanks.

They need to make you redundant if you are employees and they shut down.

If there is a business that is supporting 3-4 people why not take it over.

Even assuming that you are employees, there can be a big difference between what your are entitled to and what you actually get! Have got consisted asking him his intentions? It's a fair question if he's saying he'd like to retire.

By 'employee' do you mean you have tax & NI deducted by the trader and you have been enrolled in a work place pension? or are you similarly self- employed?
