Living in UK 1 year and can't get unsecured loan

Hi,
I moved to the UK last November and just this month bought a house (mortgage Alliance & Leicester). The house needs £5,000 worth of work

I checked out unsecured loans before the sale went through and based on affordability it seemed I would be able to get a loan. (I didn't set up the loan prior to the sale as my mortgage broker said my mortgage lender could withdrawn the offer if they saw I had taken out a loan).

BUT when I tried to get an unsecured loan I was told that I need to have been living in the UK for 3 years. I have tried several lenders who all said the same.

Are there any unsecured loans available for people living in the UK less than 3 years? (I bank with HSBC).

Any advice would be much appreciated.
