Test for prostate cancer

Good Morning folks
I went to the doctors this morning and told him that I usually need to go for a wee in the middle of the night. He said this may be an early sign of prostate cancer - I celebrated my 50th birthday last week. He suggested that I have a blood test although this is not always 100% accurate and also suggested that I have my prostate checked. He said it takes a few seconds but can feel uncomfortable.
Has anyone gone through this procedure before? Is it painful and embarrassing?
Any advice greatly appreciated

I had it a few years ago. It is slightly uncomfortable but I wouldn't say it's embarrassing.
However I'm ex forces and it takes a lot to embarrass me0 -
Of course it's embarrassing - the important thing is not to die of embarrassment. No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0

It is nothing to worry about, as unforseen says it maybe slightly uncomfortable, but I don't find it painful, just relax for the few seconds you are on the couch and don't be embarrassed, the doctors do it many times a week.0

Seeing it's now the biggest single cancer in the UK I'd put up with any inconvenience or embarrassmentEx forum ambassador

I think the discomfort is emotional rather than physical. I have become so used to the Test, I've not blinked when the last two tests have been done by female doctors.
Definitely worth having the tests done if only to eliminate any worry (getting up only once a night sounds wonderful to some of us).0 -
If you think something is going to be painful or uncomfortable ,it probably will be and the secret is to relax.0

Also it could just be a enlarged prostate quite common as you get older and nothing to do with cancer.0 -
I would love to go back to the days of only having to get up once in the night.0
