Even though it’s overdue, I’m guessing that just before you apply for a mortgage is NOT the best time to switch energy suppliers/haggle mobile contracts etc? I know we are spending more than we should be but changing anything now would a) imprint on credit files and b) lock us into contracts that would then incur additional charges when we move, correct?

Depends, are the new payments lower than the old payments (on current contracts), this could lower your risk as less going oput each month.
However, opening new accounts can reduce credit worthiness on some lenders scorecards.Life isn't about the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away. Like choking....0
