conscious sedation is really useful if you're a really nervous patient, as you feel all woozy and content during treatment and have amnesia afterwards!
  • Alexandria, what a star you are - well done you for helping yourself by knowing your fear.
I'm afraid of #######, don't like to say in case I affect someone else. Wish I could find a hypnotherapist to come to me. I have a couple of tapes from Diviniti publishing, though not dental specific they help as he is a very authoritive hypnotist which is better than a couple I've tried.

Jollyanna - some hypnotherapists will go out to patients and just charge extra. For instance, if you are afraid of leaving the house the only way to get their services is for them to come to you. I've seen local ones around my area in the yellow pages offer that.

Alexandria - well done, keep going!!!

  • Jollyanna,

I agree that sedation if you can find a dentist that does it is brilliant. You get an injection in your arm and when you wake up it's all over, you just feel a bit sleepy. Some people say they feel a bit high too but can't say I've felt that way unfortunately!

I've had a several root fillings done that way and as a very nervous patient would recommend it as you most likely won't feel or remember anything until the dentist tells you the treatments all done.
  • Just a point about the sedation, you need to have another adult available to look after you for the rest of the day. I had it lots of times (up until the fit meant I had to address fears in another way) and for the most part it was brilliant for letting get work done but it did nothing for actually getting me through the door of a dentists as the fear was still there and you can only be sedated once actually there! lol
Also I had 2 occassions where I came up from the sedation and had to be topped up, how often that happens to others I don't know but it is quite a bizarre memory as its isolated moments of awareness.

Oh and as an update, I have an appointment for a check up on Tuesday. Its my first one in 3 years and for once I am not making myself feel sick and cry at thought of it!

Im also useless when it comes to dentists, which is unfortunate as I have really weak teeth!

My dentist is quite accommodating to the gibbering wreck I am, he lets me plug in my ipod and just taps me on the shoulder when Im required to rinse lol. Listening to music calms me greatly.
