Proper old style! Living on WW2 rations

pip, actually it took us 60 years to repay the money the USA lent us. The final payment was made in 2006.
The Americans also made quite a bit of money selling us their old ships before they entered the war and our ships were being sunk by U-boats.I believe that friends are quiet angels

Although we were very grateful for their help, it all came at a cost.I believe that friends are quiet angels

To my surprise I saw lamb hearts on the meat counter in the SM. So harking back to post 66 I bought two p,us some kidneys and made my take on that recipe. I added onions and garlic, a lamb stock cube, loads of mixed herbs, a handful of chopped celery and a squirt of tomato paste. Suet crust isn't for me so I cooked it as a casserole and served with pastry as a mock pie, with spinach and mange tout.
I was agreeably surprised. It tastes fine and there's easily enough for 4 biggish helpings. I CBA to total the cost of all the bits and pieces a la Jack Monroe, but 2 hearts and 2 kidneys only cost £1.95.0 -

Despite being what some would call a fussy eater I love liver, kidneys and hearts. Mum used to make us a simple dish of hearts in gravy on toast for Sunday night tea.:j0 -
Yes I used to cook this as well, very nice.0

Interesting. I'd only ever had stuffed hearts, but this casserole was way nicer.0

I've just read through this thread with interest.
DH and I have a 1940s group on FB, and are on the last day of our current rationing challenge. It has been interesting to see what people come up with from the same basic rations. We use the ration values from April 1945.
One thing that can't be underestimated is how valuable it is having the points available. It gave the consumer choice again, and means two households can have entirely different meals depending on what they chose. This week we had oats, red lentils, semolina, a few dried dates, and a bit of golden syrup. Not heavily in debt, but still trying to sort things out.

Oh that's interesting. I went for the 1942 rations as that was the only reliable list I could find. I've done well on the actual rations, cut down on meat with no difficulty, tbh the fat/eggs/milk ration has been far more difficult. Haven't yet used all my points.
Of course the saviour is that the shops are well stocked. Managing through shortages would be the real killer.0 -
very interested in this, is there any more weekly/ monthly challenges happening at the moment to live off rations?0
-
I just challenged myself! It's cheap and healthy. I think I'm going to keep it up for another month.0
