Sambal is Indonesian (although other cultures use it too) in origin - as the OP said, its a chilli paste. What many don't realise is that "Sambal" is a bit like saying "chutney".. its a catch all that covers many different varieties, and there are Sambals to be put on the side of dishes (i.e. eaten in its raw state) and Sambals to be used as part of cooking - they contain many different ingredients. If you go into an indonesian shop in Holland you'll find shelves and shelves of different kinds of Sambals. Sambal Ulek/Olek is the basic Sambal - chillis, salt and nothing else. it can be made but easier to buy. I know Aldi have sold it, but its a westernised version, not a patch on the real thing. If you go to holland and get the chance to explore an indonesian shop then grab it.. otherwise, as others have said, large chinese supermarkets sell it. i think i've also seen it in the asian food section of large supermarkets like asda - next to the thai food.

The Dutch version of sambal oelek is available form this Dutch expat website - http://www.beeoversea.com/component/option,com_virtuemart/page,shop.browse/category_id,24/Itemid,4/lang,en/
I ordered some erwtensoep and a few other bits & pieces from it last month, and everything arrived in good order. It was a little slow but being a cheapskate I only paid for basic delivery! We used to live in NL and erwtensoep and Indonesian food are about the only things I can't get on a regular basis in the UK! Conimex is a standard brand in Holland you find in all the Dutch supermarkets. Before you criticise a man, walk a mile in his shoes. Think I bought mine in Tescos, in the Speciality / world foods section. In ours it's near all the "free from" type stuff and is where you'd find japanese rice wine and sushi papers and all that sort of stuff.
Hope that helps.I'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I'd rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are – Milton Berle0
